Google Blocks Twitpic for Malware Risk

Google has blocked around million of Twitter accounts today when the search engine found malicious malware on Twitter’s picture sharing service. The Twitpic, was mentioned as a ”malicious threat” to computers.

The search engine giant blocked the visitors from accessing the Twitpic and any image hosted by the picture sharing service from its search results and also from its Google Chrome browser, blocking millions of Twitter accounts inaccessible for several hours.

Google did not only blocked content from the Twitpic but also blocked the official Twitpic’s Twitter account from the search. While looking for content on Twitpic, following message was visible:

Content from Twitpic.com, a known malware distributor, has been inserted into this web page. Visiting this page now is very likely to infect your computer with malware.

“Malware is malicious software that causes things like identity theft, financial loss, and permanent file deletion.”

Meanwhile, Twitpic also geared up and tweeted that:

“We have also conducted a full audit of Twitpic and removed any party that could potentially cause this issue,”

“We’ve heard from Google and they have removed the block. Access to Twitpic should be restored.”

It is unclear as if there was really a malware threat posed by Twitpic or it was a Google glitch that resulted in a massive blockage of the picture sharing site. Earlier, Google put the Twitpic on suspicious site list on Google search but also showed test showing that no malware or suspicious software was found.

Google has been contacted on their version on the issue, as there will be any update HackRead will put it up for its readers.
