The ShinyHunters extortion group claims it has breached Florida’s motor vehicle agency and is threatening to release stolen files unless state officials contact the group by September 11, 2026.
A listing published on the group’s dark web leak site names the “State of Florida DMV” as its latest target. Updated on September 7 and labelled a “final warning,” the page includes a download presented as evidence of the alleged breach.
Florida’s driver and vehicle records are managed by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, known as FLHSMV. The department has not publicly confirmed a cyberattack or data breach linked to ShinyHunters.
Sample Contains Jeffrey Epstein’s Record
A proof archive reviewed by Hackread.com contained a single image appearing to show a record for convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein inside Florida’s Driver and Vehicle Information Database, or DAVID.
The screenshot displays an expired driver record alongside Epstein’s photograph and signature. It also contains a Social Security number, driver identification number, former residential address, physical details, and information about vehicles associated with the record.
FLHSMV describes DAVID as a database providing immediate access to driver and motor vehicle information. The secured system is used by authorized government and law-enforcement personnel across Florida.
The interface shown in the sample includes sections for driver history, documents, photographs, signatures, addresses, insurance, prior vehicles, and parking permits. Its appearance is consistent with Florida’s DAVID system, but the screenshot alone cannot establish how or when it was obtained.
Breach Scope Remains Unknown
The screenshot provides evidence supporting ShinyHunters’ claim, although FLHSMV has not confirmed the incident. The group has also not disclosed how it obtained the record, when the alleged access occurred, how many records were taken, or how much data it possesses.
It is worth noting that ShinyHunters has a history of making breach claims that were later confirmed by affected organizations or supported by published data. In this case, until FLHSMV responds or additional evidence is released, the Florida claim remains unverified.
However, if unauthorized access to DAVID is confirmed, the incident could represent a major breach involving sensitive personal, driving, and vehicle information belonging to Florida residents.
